Frickin Awesome Game! | | Michael Mikkelsen from Atlantic, Iowa. USA says (27/Aug/2003): | Well...I just got tis game recently(After a bunch of RPG's for PS2 came out) so I won't be comparing graphics. Well the story-line kept me on the game for 5 hours at a time, It was REALLY interesting. My favorite part of this game was the Addition battle style which kept you thinkin and tryin to master the Additions...which ticked me off cuz by the time I mastered the Addition I had my character got a new one. My favorite Addition is MADNESS HERO for Dart. The best part was the random battles cuz they did not occur as often as in FFVII. Speakin of FFVII this game by far tops it in terms of graphics, battle style, story, and gameplay. Cuz in FFVII you hit 'attack' and they did a lot of damage depending on they're weapon...not much challenge in that battle style. On the other hand you can't customize your magic in Legend of Dragoon like you can in FFVII. I really liked this game and I've beaten it 59 times!!! No lie. I ended with my characters like this: Dart at level 50, Albert at level 48, and Rose at level 49. It was EASY to beat the boss at those levels!!! So all in all I give this game a 10 out of 10 it's great...Easily the best RPG I've played.
| its one of my favorite adventure games!!!! | | kane kirkpatrick from Brazil,Indiana,usa says (28/Oct/2003): | I was walking around in walmart and i was looking for a cheap adventure game,and i found it.By looking at the case i didnt think it would be very good.But when i played it it changed my mind.It reminds me alot of the final fantasy games.I didnt now what to think after i played it.All i can say is for those who dont like it you dont now what your missing, and for those who are about to buy the game once you pick it up you wont want to put it down.
| Stop Comparing All RPGS to the highly overrated FFVII | | Paul from Pittsburgh, PA, USA says (22/Dec/2000): | I'm pretty sick of seeing everyone compare games like Legend Of Dragoon to FFVII. Dragoon is far superior in almost every respect but mainly in the fact that it isn't completely linear like FFVII. Most 'real' rpg game players know what I mean. Sure FFVII looks nice but the game play is sub par. When I play a game I want it be fun and use some brainpower...not just follow a mindless route you have little control over. Dragoon is everything a great RPG should be.
Near impossibe bosses, great storyline, shocking twists, cool battle scenarios, awsome CG graphics and cool character build-ups. The main difference between this game and FFVII is one game is geared towards being a real RPG while the other (FFVII) is trying too hard to be a frickin movie...and in th end, that's all it is.
| Pretty good | | Dogbert's Messiah from Somewhere, Canada says (24/Jan/2002): | I loved the additions, I'm a REALTIME strategy-ish person, and that was great. The graphics weren't great compared to my PS2, but, it's a PS2! Music was repetitive, but I don't listen to it much. Random battles are for experience.
Now, the guy who said crap and mentioned the blond, spiky hair. Look at ALL japanese animé. Hey, look, EVERYBODY has blond, spiky hair, or black, spiky hair, or WEIRD-COLOURED, spiky hair. The plot was actually amazing, some of the stuff you could guess, others were pretty 'out there' as far as clues go, but once you hear the result, you NOTICE THE CLUES!
No challenge in the button presses? WOW, wtF have you been playing? Some of those additions are virtually impossible, unless you play LOD non-stop for 5 months.
What sucked was that Dart's weapons were basically useless, his only good one sucking (IMHO), because the only way to use it safely was with a Therapy Ring, but, if I just used the Claymore w/ a Therapy Ring, I NEVER had to block.
The final boss was very, very easy :(, the Therapy Ring Dart had made him almost unkillable, and the Sage Cloak Haschel had, and the Phantom Shield Miranda had created similar effects. The ending blew me away, though, I do kinda think they should have subtitles, as I couldn't hear a word they were saying.
Replay value is good so far, I haven't thrown my PS2 through a wall yet!
FF, FF, FF... WHY IS THAT THE ONLY THING I HEAR ON SOMETHING MENTIONING RPGS? WHY? I've gone onto a Baldur's Gate:Dark Alliances forum, and they mentioned that every second post. I have a feeling that if I play them, they'll SUCK, because everything mentioning them hasn't really convinced me of much. "well, um, the plot saved it"-sign of a crappy game
Limited inventory sucked, but it stayed okay, and I only ran out of gold when I bought things like Ultimate Wargods (it was for getting Dart's final addition!). If you ran out, you need to spend more time lvling. I note, however, that right at the start of the game in a replay, if you try to lvl up your additions quickly, you'll end up getting up to such high D' Levels that the bosses are easy. (Doel? he EXISTED? not after the second final burst, not really)
However, overall, it was a good game, although unchallenging
| Good... but total rip off of FF7 | | stefanie 13 years old from hearst canada says (26/Jan/2002): | caracter rip off:

| Crap | | Cecil from Wisconsin, USA says (27/Jun/2001): | I played Legend of Dragoon. I hated it. Absolutely could not stand it. I've been playing RPGs since Secret of Mana (which, by the way, is one of the greatest games ever) and I have liked most of them.
-Secret of Mana had the revolutionary new method of battling- real combat in real time. Aside from it's somewhat undeveloped characters, it was a great game, and extremely fun. It is an excellent introduction to RPGs
-Final Fantasy 4 (2, for those of you who know nothing about the US-Japan problem) was a bit two-dimensional (not the graphics), but it was a fun game. It used the traditional random battles and fixed turn-based style, but the story and characters were varied and new, and therefore kept scenes fresh and interesting.
-Chrono Trigger kept fixed battles and ATB, but allowed the player to control whether or not he fought. An excellent idea and a similarly excellent story. The music and graphics were also the best of the time.
-Final Fantasy VII recreated RPGs and set the stage for many other companies to try their hand at a big, blockbuster RPG series. FF7 was a breakthrough for RPGs, it used the same random battles and ATB but introduced several new ideas as well. It borrowed some story elements from FF6 and other predecessors, but made up for it with the fact that the borrowed elements triggered fits of blissful nostalgia. It's musical score was engrossing and brought the player into the game. It's characters were well developed, their struggles were heartfelt. This was a good game for Squaresoft and the RPG industry in general.
-Final Fantasy Tactics- Strategy RPG! What it lacked in graphics and battle system (the turn based strategy system isn't a favorite among some people) it made up for completely in music, characters and story. FFT was without a doubt one of the high points for a video game with a story story.
-Xenogears was another revolution in the RPG industry. It wasn't highly publicized, but it was an awe-inspiring game with beautiful graphics and a musical score to match (Mitsuda for Life). I haven't even touched on the ingeniuos story. Xenogears, being part 5 of a 6-part novel spanning thousands of years, kept the story very interesting and understandable. It was mysterious and engrossing. With the Mitsuda's music, it made every scene seem like you were there, uncovering the thousand year-old ruins of the origins of your species. All-around great game.
-Final Fantasy VIII was another great game. It's story was a breath of fresh air, escaping much overused clichés of some past games (FF6, 7, Legend of Dragoon, etc.). The love story was romantic and believeable. The characters were some of the most real-seeming that I have ever seen in a game. It's a great game and I'm proud to own it.
Now, I've just listed some of my favorite games of the past decade, and the reasons why they are some of the best games. Legend of Dragoon was not one of them. And with good reason. The game was released several years after FF7, yet it's graphics in story and battle sequences were far less realistic than any of FF7's. I will give a bit and say that the cut scenes were nicely done, but the voice acting makes it lose points there too. The graphics alone would make the game seem like it were created in some of "experimental times" of PlayStation's past.
It's story could not pull me in. It's revelations came in spurts with annoying repetition that made me wonder about the "Teen" rating. The "romance" between Dart and Shana seemed very put on, and the story portions involving their past stunk of a FF7 ripoff. It is NOT a common story detail to have the spikey-haired blond guy hero as the childhood friend to the darker-haired girl who has a secret crush on him. I've seen this background story for only 2 games, FF7 and Legend of Dragoon.
The music was an insult to any RPGamer who had played through Xenogears, FFT or FF8. I could enjoy listening to MP3s of music from either of the other three games by itself. I could barely stand Legend of Dragoon's music DURING the game.
The battle system was foolishly unevolved. It had the same random battles, but instead made the openning to the battle so much more annoying and slow. Is the bleeding screen supposed to look aesthetically pleasing? Am I supposed to be entertained? I was not.
The addition system seemed like a pointless gesture in attempting to make the game stand out from those it copied from. However, timed button pressing is nothing new.
The game was an all-around insult to anyone who enjoys a decent RPG in my opinion. I played it, and I was happy to give it away to a local Funcoland retailer. I do not suggest this game to anyone, with the possible exception of someone a bit below mental standards who finds a challenge in timing the push of a button, who won't quite understand a story unless it is spelled out many, many times to them, who doesn't care that the music sucks because they're too absorbed with trying to get their button pushing right to pay any attention to the music. I believe that we all would have been better off if this game had never been created. I express my regret to anyone who has had the misfortune of playing this game.
| The fair but not the best | | Jacksta from Australia says (12/Dec/2001): | The Legend of Dragoon was a good game but i was quite disappionted by the graphics (except during CG) and the monster creation.
The monsters in Legend of Dragoon looked really crap compared to the ff series, i was especially disappointed by the looks of the dragons in Legend of Dragoon. Think about it, this game is 50% about dragons and dragoons but how come the bloody creation of the dragons look so crap (especially the dragon at the start of the game, it looked like a bloody grasshopper).
I think the story line was great probably better than the ones in the ff series and the battle system with the additions is much better but there was enough CG and some of the translation of the game was quite dodgy.
But overall, i still liked the ff series better (my favourite was and is ff8), i h8 people who is dissing ff8. i reckon ff8 is much better than ff7 (by miles) especially the graphics and the battle system. Back to Legend of Dragoon, only if the creators of Legend of Dragoon and the creators FF series came together to make one game it would be the best.
So there i give Legend of Dragoon 7/10, because i think it is a fair game not the best game in the whole world like how people who gives it a rating 10/10, that is just not being realistic cause this game hasn't got everything that was positive, i know that there is always a negative to any game (even PS2 games).
However, this was still one of my favourite RPG's.
| A game that just keeps on disapointing | | El_Lechero from Miami says (20/Dec/2000): | I am sorry to say that I was disappointed when my cousin bought LOD. This game has graphics that barely meet FFVII quality and the battle sytem plainly is < remove me > at !#%ed up. One must press a variety of buttons just to do a measly amount of damage. A single battle encounter can take a surprising amount of time and I would rather not talk about boss battles. I recommend anyone who even thinks about buying this game to buy FFIX or Chrono Cross
| RPG's are all the same | | Michael from Ho chi ming city,Vietnam says (26/Jan/2002): | Legend of dragoon is just like Final Fantasy except Final Fantasy was the real RPG and all they others are just total rip-off this include Legend of dragoon, this is the only game I fell asleep will playing. The caracters are all the same, the main caracter is always a guy and fall in love with the second most important caracter(mostly a girl) and there's always a big man.
others coincidence, Dart and Cloud both have a sword and they main goal is to get veagence.
Cloud=Dart
Tifa=Shana
Cid=Lavitz
Barret=Kongol
Sephiroth=Lloyd
Yuffie=Mero
p.s. The star goes to Kongol
