The Legend of Dragoon was a basically average game.2962

Erik from Sault Ste. Marie, Canada says (8/Jul/2001):
Some people say that this game totally sucked. I disagree. I heard people say it was similar to Final Fantasy 7's love story between Tifa and Cloud. Maybe a little but look at FF3's Locke and Celes (even though it was less obvious)

Now I'm 14 and my first RPG ever was FF3. And you can see why this got me into RPG's and lately RPG's such as FF8 and FF8 have sort of turned me off. The Legend of Dragoon made me optimistic at first but became more interesting as the story unfolded and the second time playing it I was more interested.

However the tranlations sucked and as with alot of RPG's the random battles p****d me off. But the additions helped until I mastered them all. The music was a little weak with only a couple of songs (all of the boss music) were worthy of an RPG. The graphics were good eswpecially when the people were talking.

Overall it was a good game (but it was no FF3) and I hope that future games include the additions. Thank You.

Legend of Dragoon kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Written by Tony Soto2916

Tony Soto from California,USA says (5/Jul/2001):
What is wrong with all you Legend of Dragoon Haters??!! This is the most awesome RPG game that I have ever played. The addition system is great. The German guy is right when he says that a lot of people are lazy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this game. Lavitz's death did kinda suck, but I like King Albert more than Lavitz anyway so it worked out fine. People who tal crap about Legend of Draggon need to get their heads checked 'cause they are full of sh*t.

Crap2841

Cecil from Wisconsin, USA says (27/Jun/2001):
I played Legend of Dragoon. I hated it. Absolutely could not stand it. I've been playing RPGs since Secret of Mana (which, by the way, is one of the greatest games ever) and I have liked most of them.

-Secret of Mana had the revolutionary new method of battling- real combat in real time. Aside from it's somewhat undeveloped characters, it was a great game, and extremely fun. It is an excellent introduction to RPGs
-Final Fantasy 4 (2, for those of you who know nothing about the US-Japan problem) was a bit two-dimensional (not the graphics), but it was a fun game. It used the traditional random battles and fixed turn-based style, but the story and characters were varied and new, and therefore kept scenes fresh and interesting.
-Chrono Trigger kept fixed battles and ATB, but allowed the player to control whether or not he fought. An excellent idea and a similarly excellent story. The music and graphics were also the best of the time.
-Final Fantasy VII recreated RPGs and set the stage for many other companies to try their hand at a big, blockbuster RPG series. FF7 was a breakthrough for RPGs, it used the same random battles and ATB but introduced several new ideas as well. It borrowed some story elements from FF6 and other predecessors, but made up for it with the fact that the borrowed elements triggered fits of blissful nostalgia. It's musical score was engrossing and brought the player into the game. It's characters were well developed, their struggles were heartfelt. This was a good game for Squaresoft and the RPG industry in general.
-Final Fantasy Tactics- Strategy RPG! What it lacked in graphics and battle system (the turn based strategy system isn't a favorite among some people) it made up for completely in music, characters and story. FFT was without a doubt one of the high points for a video game with a story story.
-Xenogears was another revolution in the RPG industry. It wasn't highly publicized, but it was an awe-inspiring game with beautiful graphics and a musical score to match (Mitsuda for Life). I haven't even touched on the ingeniuos story. Xenogears, being part 5 of a 6-part novel spanning thousands of years, kept the story very interesting and understandable. It was mysterious and engrossing. With the Mitsuda's music, it made every scene seem like you were there, uncovering the thousand year-old ruins of the origins of your species. All-around great game.
-Final Fantasy VIII was another great game. It's story was a breath of fresh air, escaping much overused clichés of some past games (FF6, 7, Legend of Dragoon, etc.). The love story was romantic and believeable. The characters were some of the most real-seeming that I have ever seen in a game. It's a great game and I'm proud to own it.

Now, I've just listed some of my favorite games of the past decade, and the reasons why they are some of the best games. Legend of Dragoon was not one of them. And with good reason. The game was released several years after FF7, yet it's graphics in story and battle sequences were far less realistic than any of FF7's. I will give a bit and say that the cut scenes were nicely done, but the voice acting makes it lose points there too. The graphics alone would make the game seem like it were created in some of "experimental times" of PlayStation's past.

It's story could not pull me in. It's revelations came in spurts with annoying repetition that made me wonder about the "Teen" rating. The "romance" between Dart and Shana seemed very put on, and the story portions involving their past stunk of a FF7 ripoff. It is NOT a common story detail to have the spikey-haired blond guy hero as the childhood friend to the darker-haired girl who has a secret crush on him. I've seen this background story for only 2 games, FF7 and Legend of Dragoon.

The music was an insult to any RPGamer who had played through Xenogears, FFT or FF8. I could enjoy listening to MP3s of music from either of the other three games by itself. I could barely stand Legend of Dragoon's music DURING the game.

The battle system was foolishly unevolved. It had the same random battles, but instead made the openning to the battle so much more annoying and slow. Is the bleeding screen supposed to look aesthetically pleasing? Am I supposed to be entertained? I was not.

The addition system seemed like a pointless gesture in attempting to make the game stand out from those it copied from. However, timed button pressing is nothing new.

The game was an all-around insult to anyone who enjoys a decent RPG in my opinion. I played it, and I was happy to give it away to a local Funcoland retailer. I do not suggest this game to anyone, with the possible exception of someone a bit below mental standards who finds a challenge in timing the push of a button, who won't quite understand a story unless it is spelled out many, many times to them, who doesn't care that the music sucks because they're too absorbed with trying to get their button pushing right to pay any attention to the music. I believe that we all would have been better off if this game had never been created. I express my regret to anyone who has had the misfortune of playing this game.

It just plain ol' rocks, dude!2740

Skig from NJ, USA says (17/Jun/2001):
I gotta tell ya... this is my absolute fav game! The graphics are AWESOME... it ain't too hard (actually, I almost finished my first playthrough!), and the plot is great! It's gotten to the point that I'm almost obsessed it's so radical. The only major bummer is Lavitz's death, that totally stunk. Otherwise, 'ledgend of dragoon' rulz. 1,000,000 thumbs up!

According to the letter of the aussie(2/2/2001)2509

Florian from Germany, in the near of Hamburg says (23/May/2001):
I think absolutely the same. It is an copy of FF7, but in fact it is not that bad. The story is almost interesting, and sometimes thrilling. Well, O.K. It is not a Final Fantasy. But let´s think about Wild Arms. This game is really bad. I score it with 7/10. Because it is entertaining.

PS Sorry for the bad english (I'm german)

CAN'T GET ANY BETTER!2505

Andrew M. from Mississauga, Ontario. Canada says (22/May/2001):
For all you people who say that the addition system is far too complex because of all the button presses you are obviously very lazy! Unlike all you lazy people out there, I would rather have more of an involvement in fighting than just watch as it plays out. LOD surpasses every other RPG not only in the battle system but in the story line, CG movies, graphics, and overall fun factor. So for all you LOD haters, you should wake up and realize that LOD is far more superior than any other RPG!!!!

Apples and oranges.2283

Michael says (6/Mar/2001):
I really liked this game, even if almost every body says that it sucks I don’t care.
First of all every one says that it is no FF VII well du does it say Final Fantasy VII on the box NO.
Others say that the game is a knock off that they got their ideas form other games or cartoons. Well for all you smart people out there no crap they got there ideas from some where else every idea that you or some one else can think of will have all ready have been used. Some say that the characters just like FFVII dart has spiky hair and so does cloud. Oh no not that!! I can think of at least 10 games that has characters with band aids on there face.

A good but not great game.2165

Steven Nagy from Buick City, Flint,Mi US of A says (22/Feb/2001):
This game is alot of fun because of it's new attack system and because of the Additions that you can get the cinematics were alright but for all you ff fans you know that ff titles have way better and longer cinematics. the graphics kinda SUCK but aren't super bad. The Dialoge is a little small for the those people with glasses. I would say that this game is a good game to play if you're more an action game player instead of an RPGer. I would like to see the ff series use this type of battle system, they would then be able to sell this to a larger group of people. And for you who say this game blows all ff's out of the water I would fist suggest you try the whole ff game instead of only not gettin past the first. I do like this game but it doesn't match up with the ff series YET but could easily do so if square soft doesn't make a new battle system soon like in FFX.

A Good RPG With A Few Faults2132

Leon from USA says (19/Feb/2001):
I dont understand why everyone thinks its so great. The storyline is really bad.The music sucks and all the characters are cheap remakes of FFVII. The graphics are ok but i've seen better. But what makes me interested in this game is the gameplay the battle system is great even though you can't carry enough items. And there are no where near as many instant battles as in FF titles.Everything else though seems to copy other things like the divine moon objects my cousin told me those were the same Divine Moon Objects as in "Sailor Moon".But other than these faults its a great game.If you cant decide between Chrono Cross and LOD let me help you....Chrono Cross!!!

WSD's L.O.D. Review2040

A gamer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada says (9/Feb/2001):
I loved this game. It is the best RPG I have ever played, yet it was not flawless, nonetheless. I have played it through 8 times in the last 4 months, and loved it every time.(My fastest time was 38 hours using Dart, Rose & Shana/Miranda(replace each other)) I found that even though the cinematics were quite well done, and realistic, the in-game graphics could have been better. I also would have expected, since the game is 4 discs, that there would be voice, even in the cut-scenes (non-cinematic)and that there would have been the option of turning captions on and off. I especially like the dragoon dragon summon magic, especially the white silver dragon summon that shana/miranda gets, mostly because it never does less than 1500 damage and always heals your guys!(Divides damage equally among party members to heal!) The only thing that dissappointed me about this game: I had to wear my new glasses constantly while playing and therefore had a headache after quiting most of the time! This game, over all, is peachy

The legend of the dragoon is an amazing game with a great story maybe even better than FF7, 8, and 9.2024

Paul P. from USA says (7/Feb/2001):
The legend of the dragoon has some pretty good graphics, its impossible to go to the wrong area, and although most reviews say it's bad I SUGGEST TRYING IT! please rent it at least, okay. The main character is a warrior who lost his family to a monster known as The Black Monster wich appeared 11,000 years ago. Dart ,the main character, swears to get revenge on the black monster. In his new home Seles Dart met a girl named Shana, he left to get revenge and left his bestfreind shana in seles to wonder why. five years later a war had struck the country and when Dart retuns to seles it's been burned to the ground, and Shana has been captured. Sorry got a little off what I meant to be saying. the graphics off the legend off the dragoon are definately better than FF7, the story is most likely better as well, also it's a much tuffer game to get by on makeing its self more challenging than FF7, and 8. again the story line is the best in the east and the west. the idiea off additons I think is better than the normal 1-4 hits of FF7. anyways please buy, or rent it because i've only told the very least of how good it is. thank you for reading and I hope you haer me out!

I think this game is the best adventure game out.1716

A gamer from Enid , Oklahoma says (15/Jan/2001):
LOD has to be the greatest game out, because if you're a big action gamer like me its pretty hard to get used to adventure games, but LOD's battle format added a difficult battle to every battle. Which is great if you don't like to wait aroud while the charecters use long attacts like Blazing Dynamo, instead of becoming a true coach potatoe like Final Fanicy addicts. So in my opinon the creators of this game should make sequels to it.
I am sure it'll become a great success.

I realy like this game but I think it could be better.1667

Alex from Tacoma (Washington) USA says (13/Jan/2001):
Legend of Dragoon is a great game. The graphics, the movies, story, but one thing that bugs me is you can't pause really. In the FF series you can pause whenever you like just about. I admit, ff8 was a total stinker a sucks but ff7 and ff9 are big hits. I mean I was so adicted to ff9 I got on the third disk on just the third day of playing it. Legend of Dragoon is pretty adicting too but I'm still on the 1st disk in three days. It's kind of a drag on game but if they make a new Legend of Dragoon, and add this little things like pause almost whenever, and make the game go a bit faster, then it will be the greatest game ever made.

Read this!1503

A gamer from USA says (3/Jan/2001):
Ok Legend of dragoon is a great game, it's graphics are awesome and it's computer generated cinemas are more detailed! Plus, there's voice in the cinemas so u have a feel for the game unlike ff9 or whatever! (read this only if you are a fan of ff series: it sucks i'm sorry the game the characters! Stop blaming legend of dragoon for it getting higher sales because they are better than ff8 or whatever of the stupid series!). I give it a 10 because if u were a ff fan than u would give it a 10 because the characters are weird, and the CG movies suck! If u want a different kind of RPG play legend of dragoon!

To all of you who keep giving Legend of Dragoon praise, read on and realise how naive u really are1468

A gamer from Melbourne Australia says (2/Jan/2001):
Legend of Dragoon is fabulous. Thats what everyone is saying isnt it. Great story, characters bla bla bla . Well sorry to spoil the party people, but this game is the most unoriginal peace of crap to ever hit the market. All of you who loved this game and hastily gave it a score of 10/10 are absolute suckers. I would hope that those people who post reviews to Stationplay.com should at least have some insight into the videogame world and enough experience to give their opinions credibility. But some novices keep giving Legend of Dragoon 10/10 when really all copies of it should be gathered and burnt. Sorry for babbling on here but now ill explain my reasons why this game is such a joke.
Has anyone heard of a game called Final Fantasy VII. Arguably the greatest and most revolutionary game ever. Now, what was it that made this game so great. Characters such as Cloud and the charming and sinister Sephiroth, in combination with some of the most climactic and dramatic scenes ever to appear in a game, made Final Fantasy VII the most awe-inspiring title ever. The scene in which Sephiroth jumps from nowhere and stabs Aries in the back would have to be the most thrilling moment in videogame history, along with Squall and Siefer's duel during the intro of Final Fantasy VIII.Yet Legend of Dragoon has criminally taken these characters and moments which made Final Fantasy V11 so great and reproduced them in the most appalling and downright ridiculous act of piracy I have ever seen. For all of u who havent realised it yet, Dart and Lloyd are basically reproductions of Cloud and Sephiroth. In both appearance and character, Lloyd is the same as Sephiroth, just look at them for crying out loud. They both have platinum hair, wear the same clothes, are unparralled in their swordsmansip. I could just keep going on. Although this is already unforgivable, one thing in particular just keeps bugging me. The moment in which Sephiroth stabs Aries has been reused in Legend of Dragoon in the form of Lloyd stabbing and killing Dart's buddy Lavitz.
Anyone who played Final Fantasy VII, whether they liked it or not, should be able to see what a blatant act of injustice the makers of Legend of Dragoon have committed against the ever superior developers at Squaresoft. So those of you who keep showering Legend of Dragoon with praise should realise that the characters and moments that made you love this game so much were stolen from the original and the best, Final Fantasy VII.

Shear Genius!1247

Dyne Waters from Pennsylvania, USA says (24/Dec/2000):
This game has graphics that do lack at times but the CGI scenes are the best I have ever seen. The battle system is a cross between Vagrant Story, PE, and Final Fantasy games. Slightly turn based with a twist of player effect on the battle. I give this game a 10 because currently I think that it is unparalelled by any other RPG. I have every RPG that has been put out and I definatly think that this game may even Rival FF 9.

Stop Comparing All RPGS to the highly overrated FFVII1247

Paul from Pittsburgh, PA, USA says (22/Dec/2000):
I'm pretty sick of seeing everyone compare games like Legend Of Dragoon to FFVII. Dragoon is far superior in almost every respect but mainly in the fact that it isn't completely linear like FFVII. Most 'real' rpg game players know what I mean. Sure FFVII looks nice but the game play is sub par. When I play a game I want it be fun and use some brainpower...not just follow a mindless route you have little control over. Dragoon is everything a great RPG should be.
Near impossibe bosses, great storyline, shocking twists, cool battle scenarios, awsome CG graphics and cool character build-ups. The main difference between this game and FFVII is one game is geared towards being a real RPG while the other (FFVII) is trying too hard to be a frickin movie...and in th end, that's all it is.

A game that just keeps on disapointing1165

El_Lechero from Miami says (20/Dec/2000):
I am sorry to say that I was disappointed when my cousin bought LOD. This game has graphics that barely meet FFVII quality and the battle sytem plainly is < remove me > at !#%ed up. One must press a variety of buttons just to do a measly amount of damage. A single battle encounter can take a surprising amount of time and I would rather not talk about boss battles. I recommend anyone who even thinks about buying this game to buy FFIX or Chrono Cross
