Worth My Wait! | | Jason Brum from Middlesex, UK says (4/Nov/2000): | After MONTHS of holding back, Konami decided to release another addition to the popular japanese rhythm action game, Beatmania.
After playing the first beatmania in an arcade in London, I was hooked, and finding out that you could buy it for the Playstation was a blessing. Little did I know that millions already owned the game and were as addicted as me, so off I went to the nearest Computer Exchange and got myself a Japanese Playstation and the Beatmania cd and controller.
The controller, to no surprise, is the only thing I can recommend to play this game with. The controller itself it little more than a small sheet of plastic with a mock mini 9" turntable and 5 buttons placed in a similar way to the keys on a keyboard. |_| |_|

After playing the original for a few months, I must admit, it got a little repetative, but HA! Wait! Beatmania Append Gottamix has been released! ooh! Gotta go out and get it! anyways, I reserved my copy and got it 3 weeks later. I slipped in the original beatmania disc, and selected the Change Disk option. And yes, when I placed the sc in the drive and pressed start, My heart was racing, All the waiting had paid off! It worked!!
Up popped the menu. Hmmm...Start game...Select difficulty... Normal...Select song...Now here was the interesting part. to start with there were a few songs to choose to play to, but as the game went on...I'll explain later.
When the first song started, I was shocked to see that nothing was changed, only the music. Although, I must admit, the music is pretty damn catchy! The graphics were nothing to write home about - blue and white lines flying down the screen were expected, but thats it... Blue and white lines.
Oh yeah, and the odd red one to tell youu when to scratch the turntable. The videos to go with the song were pretty much Bitmaps cut and pasted one after the other, once again, not very impressive, but once you play the game and do well, you'll see, it's an unbelievable experience when there is a difficult song and you just pass it, Oh look! You unlocked a secret stage! Wow! It's rave! You love rave!
To top off the review Id just like to say that if you are willing to spend above £50 - $60 to buy this, I recommend you find an arcade to try it out in first. But, if you are farmiliar with the Beatmania series and enjoy them, I highly recommend either buying/renting this and trying it out then buying gottamix2 or 3rd mix, because they are far better.
