Punishing!! | | Monterio Weaver from Jacksonville, Florida USA says (15/Dec/2000): | At first glance, Blast Radius looks like a Colony Wars expansion pack. But once you're into the missions, it becomes increasingly apparent that you are in a no-holds-barred duel to the death with the game AI. Although BR's learning curve is as steep as learning to play PacMan, it is hideously punishing. I say that because the ability to save your current position in the game doesn't exist. This proves to be VERY frustrating, when you have taken great pains to eek out victories in 2 of the 3 arenas only to be blasted out of the stars in the 3rd arena with NO possible way of returning to where you were previously.
The biggest dissappointment in this game is that you can only save in between stages (in which there are 3 painfully difficult missions in each stage)and not in the missions, WHERE IT REALLY COUNTS. So unless you figure out what you need to do get past that mission you keep getting killed in, you are doomed to relive those last moments, over and over and over again. That is what I call punishing.
Once you get past the annoying save "feature" in this game, and the fact that all of the ships resemble malformed, but cool looking, lego blocks with texture mapping, then the game is actually a "blast". The dogfights are absolutely riveting and totally engaging. If you possess any king of combat-sim flying experience at all, you will find yourself utitlizing every trick in your arsenal, for the enemy ships are relentless, unforgiving and pretty craft at times. It's very obvious that the ingenious creators of the Colony Wars franchise have went to extensive development to make the AI challenging. It IS, trust me...it IS!! The farther along you get into Blast Radius, the harder you will find it becomes to complete your mission objectives. Blast Radius is not for the impatient, and definately not for the time-tested and battle-worn sim strategist. But if you are looking for some spectacular looking effects, skill punishing AI and some serious gut-wrenching action, then bring your gamepad, a serious attitude adjustment problem, and a desire to blast everything and everyone in sight. In the end, this game SERIOUSLY rocks!!
