Best fighting kung fu game ever. | | J Barnes. from England. says (16/Dec/2002): | When I first plated this game i thought "wow this is great". and it is too.the graphics are decent and there is no slowdown, not even when there is eight of you battling it out.the sounds are good too. there is authentic chinese style music in the game,and when you here the opening music at the title screen, you get that weird oriental feeling,and the music relaxes you. the thing i don't like about the sound is the voices of the characters. some of them sound the same,but this little flaw doesn,t ruin the gameplay. the sounds of the feet stomping and the crushing blows is excellent, especially when two of you do a flying kick at the same time and only one of you get hit,there is a snapping sound.the music is good too while fighting, especially the track called evil road. The gameplay is good because there are 6 different styles of martial arts to master, Shaolin being the main one. some take time to master, especially the one with the different poses. In one player mode you choose boy or girl and as you fight and complete certain tasks,you acquire more skills and combos.obviously these are already available in multiplayer mode,but to learn them off by heart you have to save the game with all the different martial arts styles you've mastered.this is so you can check up on them if you are stuck. there are also lots of characters to unlock, adding to the gameplay.
The fun really starts when you select verse mode where you can pick verse computer, verse 1 on 1, verse four players or verse EIGHT PLAYERS!!! this is the best as you can play with a friend against 6 computer controled characters or use a multi-tap so four or eight (if you're lucky) can duke it out. the best thing about 8 players is that if you stay out of the fight too long and just watch them, they will all turn on you (you'll know this by the coloured leaves that appear above your head). it's really funny cause you get beaten pretty bad. I think this game is original as it is the first ever eight player fighting game for the ps1. the graphics are good, there are plenty of secret characters to unlock, the fighting styles and movements are spot on and there are some pretty good chinese style music to listen to while duking it out, plus the fighting styles are all from China,adding to the originality.If you haven't played Shaolin, you haven't lived the real fighting experience of China.
