The pinnacle of rpg making |
| Maximus from Toronto says (14/Dec/2003): |
Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some of the comments here are based solely on the negatives of the game. I mean this is an epic game. This is a game that makes you think. A perfect blend of drama, comedy, and romance. All the characters are tied together wonderfully. Personally I don't like the main character very much but he's supported by a very likeable cast. What's good about this:
+An enticing story line that surpass any previous rpg I've played. (Including ff7 which i really liked ; LOD ; all other ff's excluding ff6; xenogear)
+Characters that you come to love (i.e Laguna)
+Best graphic of its time.
+A decent battle system
+Enjoyable sidequests
+Monsters no longer drop coins (u now earn money the real way - working for it)
+/-Long
What's bad:
-The GF sequence(taking way too long w/ no option to cut short)
-Laguna not being the main character
-Battles not interactive enough like vagrant story/LOD/Legend of Legaia)
To sum it up, an excellent rpg experience to say the least. The minor flaws are overshadowed by an engrossing story line. Please note the best age group to play this is between 16-21. Below or above this age group will not appreciate it as much. Btw, I can't believe there are ppl who still havn't play this game.
And the reason why the characters forget about their past is b/c of the drawback that comes w/ equiping GF.
Peace

this........game.......is.......GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Lenny from Indiana USA says (17/Oct/2002): |
This game is probably one of the best RPG's i've ever played. It puts even Resident Evil to shame (and for me to say that is almost sacriligous). This game has the best of each type of Final Fantasy. I really liked the way u stock spells instead of MP (mp is really stupid. i hate havin to waste item slots on MP recovery items). The GF's were a nice touch. The only problem with them was the boost's little X thing that stopped u from boosting. that should not of been in there. and the Chocobos!!!!! what the heck is up with the pocketstation for american version and then make us wait for it to come out. I need to get one so i can get mog and new chicobo abilities. And the card game was a little tough to understand but it's worth it to get the cards then refine them. A word to all those who think that the card game is a waste of time. U NEED TO PLAY IT TO GET LAGUANA'S CARD AND REFINE IT INTO 100 HEROS!!!! The only thing i have to say about this game as a closin statement is that this would be a great game for those who want a challenge. The last boss is nearly impossible to beat (except when u have hero-war) and is a little easier with gameshark. I'm on my 7th time playing it. Gameshark is not recommended for those who want to have fun. gameshark ruins it completely with some codes. Especially when u use the all characters LV 100 zell is down to LV 1. Well TTFN. Ta Ta For Now!!!

IT'S BRILLIANCE SURPASSES MY OWN |

I've heard some bollocks in my time but when i hear people bad-mouth final fantasy 8, that is when i lose my temper. They say the junctioning system is $#< remove me > at ! but that only applies to imbecilles who don't know how to use it. They say after disk 1 it gets cranky, wrong again, cos' i have played this game since i was 8 years old and the plot gets better and better, only a dick would want the sorcerous to die on disk 1, and since when is seifer $#< remove me > at ! ti fight, i thought the seifer battles were kick-ass. When i was 8 i thought of the game as average because i didn't know how to play it properly cos it was my first ff game. Now that i am older i can defeat Omega weapon and defeat any enemy in seconds so fuk yourself if you think squall is wank cos any ff character has an equal chance of defeating any other.
You don't have to buy the game if you don't want to but this game changed my life and helped me through tough times. if i was bullied at school i would just say sumthin like "at least i don't fight dirty ... like you" and then i would proper kick arse if they didn't stop. Do not go sayin' i just like ff8 because i have ff7 ff9 ff10 ff6 ff5 ff4 and tactics advance, not to metion kingdom hearts, so i have experiance and to any ff8 haters, i killed sephiroph by using knights of the round, that was too easy, at least you have to work hard to beat Ultimecia

THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Squall from Michigan says (10/Mar/2004): |
Who ever thinks ff VIII sucks can go F*** themselves. yes ff VII was great but there is no compairison. ff VIII is the best. I loved all of the characters (even though some of them were weaker than others). The graphics were awsome. Everyone who says the plot was stupid all total idioits it was great, if there was a book about it I would totaly read it. I totaly loved the junction systom and the battles. The music isn't something i would usualy listen to but it was alright. The lifespan was great I have beaten it all of the way through six times. whoever listens to that idioit that says that nine was better the eight don't. I got nine it was alright but it got boring. If you are looking for another great final fantasy game go for ff II it might be hard to find these days but I relly enjoyed it. Back to eight the only part that got me bored was going back as langua. He's cool ,but that part of the game got me bored. Plus his whole story about raine was sad. :( I think if that they would have kille Dr. Odine alot could have been prevented. The end boss was fun but not relly that hard to beat, but if were talking about that in ff VII I was just getting started and seporoth was dead big disappointment.
ff IX was so short each disk only takes about a day. :p on that note ff VIII is AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Final Fantasy VIII was over - bashed. |
| Ben from New York says (26/Dec/2002): |
Let's face it FF VIII did horrible with the hardcore final fantasy gamers....well most of them anyways. I have been from site to site looking at peoples reviews on how this game sucked hard and well I agreed. Until (like I do with all my final fantasy games) I played it a second time and relized DAMN this is a good game. I always seem to fall deep into final fantasy games. I played 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 over and over because of how much I love the charecters and the world they lived in. I soon fell for Squall, Ranoa and the other captivating charecters who grace the FF8 world. The ending to me after really paying attention to the charecter development and story had me upset that my journey with Squall would be over. It ended up being my favorite ending(X coming up on a close rear). FF8 is an under estimated game by most and I don't think rightfuly so. The love story was tight, Seifer owned and the world they lived in complimented the charecters development and greatness. This game isn't the classic Final Fantasy but it's not that far off, it has a great story, GREAT charecters and a unique way of rpg style fighting. This game has become one of my favorites an always will be. I would have given this game a four before but I feel compelled to give it a perfect score of 10....for the perfect game.

Was good but not that good!! |
| Chris from England says (23/Aug/2003): |
To be honest i did like this game to some extent but it cannot be compared to the legendary FF7 which in my opinion is the best game of all time.
FF8 had even amounts of good and bad qualities which isn't good to have in a game. One of the qualities i liked about this game is the card game system - between the FF8 card game and the FF9 card game i would chose the FF8 version because it is a hell of a lot more simple although it takes hours sumtimes to get the cards u want lol. The FF9 card game took me ages to understand the workings of it. anyway other qualities i like were the magic system where u could equip magics to increase your stats.
Bad qualities of this game where the fact that your allies followed in a line that was just plain stupidity because it looks sad and does not follow a trend of any of the previous games in the series. The weapons were another letdown for the game. It could take you hours to find the items u wanted to upgrade your weapons (in total i think i spent about 10 hours searching for items i needed)
the CG were good but the visual surrounds of the main game were poor. FF7 surrounds where alot more detailed and a lot better quality allthough the characters werent as good in FF7.
Over all I think this is a good game and i would recomened playing it.

EXCELLENT! |
| Dave Rowntree from Burton on Trent says (22/Aug/2004): |
I loved this game it was my first final fantasy and it took a while to complete but i did it in the end. The trick to completing this game is to draw magic. With a healthy stock of magic and three characters on level 40 or over you will beat dis game with ease. Also for those who are stuck when you ace ultimecias final form at 1 point there will be 2 targets that is when you draw appocalypse of the 1 of them make sure you get a good stock of these whilst you can as the second ultimecia isnt around for long. Justkeep using recover on the people you have that have survived and keep casting appocalypse when you can. After beating the final boss just sit back and watch the final part. I have only 1 final fantasy to beat now and thats 7 anyone have any hints for me. If so send them me please. Final fantasy 8 proves that final fantasys rock like no other game and it also proves that comuter games can really make you involved and can teach us all lessons about real life in a virtual world. If i could explain how much thid game means to me you would give it a try because i like it that much. Also make sure you have plenty of meltdown magic because this really comes in handy. Make sure you use diablos o every boss because you will find it does tons of damage to half of them.

An average game but no where near as good as the others |
| Moo from Norwich, England says (20/Aug/2004): |
This game is about a stoic, young mercenary named Squall who is hired by Balamb garden and is sent around the world to do numerous missions, the love interest is a girl named Rinoa who he meets on one of his missionsThis game starts off well, I love the idea of the garden and every bit in the garden is good. In fact the first disc is brilliant. BUT then it all goes horribly wrong. Physical attacks are too weak and so you just end up using GFs. There are a few side quests none of them worth doing(apart from the Shumi village part.) It is horribly repetitive you just keep fighting Seifer and Sorceresses for very little reason, Squall keeps getting infuriated for no apparent reason and thats about it. It really does get very boring after a while. You just have to resort to summoning GFs and the seqeunces get very boring after a while. Its a long game and the only reson I bought it and played it through to the end was purely because it is a final fantasy game. Another bad part of the game is when 'Garden master NORG' appeares for no apparent reason and kills every1. The dream sequences are quite good though I think because it allows you to play as other characters. Basically this game relies to much on summoning and summoners. Buy it, but only if you can get it cheap.

Final Fantasy 8 is Great but there are some flaws!!! |
| Steven Y. from Cabot, AR USA says (28/Jun/2004): |
Since final fantasy 8 came out i havent stopped playing it!! it has been one of the best games that i have ever played... with one exception! The battle with ultimicia was way to easy!! in final fantasy 7 the final battle with sephiroth was much harder than the battle with the final boss (ultimicia) in 8!! on another note... ruby weapon and omega weapon... which is harder??? in final fantasy 8 there is a great strategy that you can use to defeat omega... aura, holy war, limit break, eden!!!! in final fantasy 7 there is not really a good strategy to defeating ruby weapon! unless of course you use hades and parylize him but that only lasts one to two turns! even by using kotr it takes a minimum of 45 min. to beat him!!! i defeated omega weapon in 15 min! come on people shouldnt there be harder bosses??? another thing that i think should be added to final fantasy 8 to make it better is a different plot!!! woo hoo love!!!!! there are so many other things in the world that you could have used as a plot besides love! you know from the begging of the game you know that squall (or whatever you named him) and rinoa (the princess) are going to fall in love!!!!thank you for your time! and please feel free to email me!!!!!! FINAL FANTASY 7 IS THE GREATEST!!!!!
|
I really didn't like this game as much as 7 and the others |
| John from Bonney Lake,Washington, USA says (22/Aug/2003): |
Among the many things I hated about Final Fantasy VIII, there are some things that were unique and good about it. First was, to all of us around 12 or that area, this would have most likely been the first time you were introduced to the card game, though my first time through the game I really didn't get it but it was fun and I hope they'll keep using it in FF10 and up. The other thing I liked was that you could teach your summons skills and the fact that they leveled up as you did, and that it only takes 1000exp to level up. I hate that you only get to have 6 weapons in the whole game, that bothered me as I don't like taking time to sit for hours upon hours running all over dungeon to try and find the piece you need to complete you weapon. And on Squalls weapons there were a few that were exactly the same except the blade was turned differently and that the gun part might have changed a little bit, but only the revolver and the Lion Heart have any major differences. Another thing that I didn't like was the limit system. Unless using aura you have to get beat up to use it. and I was never good at the trigger attacks either so the limit break was almost usless to mee until I finally got the Lion Heart , witch I will admit was the coolest attack!
|
A BRILLIANT GAME! IT WILL TAKE A WHILE TO BEAT DIS! |
| Dave Rowntree from Birmingham says (7/Jul/2004): |
This game is amazing it was my first final fantasy and since this i have been a dedicated fan. I'm not sayin its better than final fantasy 7 or 9 because they are just as good. The story line to this game is unique and imaginative I LOVE IT! The characters are really detailed in characteristics especially squall he has to be the greatest character in gaming history. I urge anyone who hasn't tried a final fantasy to play this game. Anyone who was disappointed isn't facing the facts that this is a well built game. Its practically flawless just like the other final fantasys, the people at squaresoft are all geniuses. I say that everyone on this page should give respect top the guys because if your on this page you have been moved by a final fantasy. Anyway back to the game the friendship between the main characters is well progressed as the game goes on. Sorry but no one will beat this game and the only people who will equal it are squaresoft. It gave me some fond memories and the love between squall and rinoa still touches me after 5 years of first playing the game. Also i will say if you like final fantasy 7,8 or 9 give 10 and 10-2 a try because these are also proof that final fantasy rocks more than any other game.

A Wonderful Game |
| A gamer from Petal, MS, USA says (6/Jul/2003): |
I believe Final Fantasy VIII to be one of the best in it's series and genre. The storyline was wonderful and very touching. :tear: The graphics were pretty good in my opinion. The music was simply beautiful. Especially the opening song ,that was my absolute favorite. The replay value I believe is high. I never get tired of replaying through the whole game because everything was simply wonderful. I actually liked the whole battle system and junction. This system was easier than FF 7. I really liked all the side quests the game had to offer. I also liked Triple Triad, I thought it was a fun card game(once you have good cards it's fun beating everyone else) Though I did have my qualms with the game. The fact that there were no voices to the characters irked me a little. The ending in a way upset me, too. It was sort of abrupt and left a person wanting more. I also thought the whole villain thing was a little confusing because she didn't have any reason for being evil. She was just evil. The game also became too easy when Squall was leveled up. All in all, the blend of memorable characters, beautiful music and interesting adventures comes together and makes a wonderful video game...FF 8.

Great game but far to easy |
| Steve from Chicago says (29/Jul/2003): |
This was the first RPG game I have ever played and I loved and hated parts of it. The things I loved were the character dynamics the time shifting story lines and the great character to character relations that developed throughput the games vast story. I also had alot of fun with the card game portion of the game the constantly changing rules and huge number of cards made mastering the card game the hardest part of the game. Which of course brings me to FF VIII downside, the game was just to damn simple. Just level and collect high magic and you could dominate every portion of the battles in the game even the final battle was easy. I was looking for more of a challenge but I never really found it I suspect it maybe partially because of my desire to play the game in depth and explore all the options the game had to offer as far as weapons, magic, and items. If the game had been a bit more challenging I think that I would have had alot more fun with it. I also thought the leveling system was simple as opposed to the more complex system of FF IX. However this was an awsome game I enjoyed playing it and couldn't stop playing it until I reached the end. All in all a great game with a few small glitches.

Whatever |
| anonomous one from USA says (22/Dec/2006): |
Since the reveiw Has to be 200 words i'll make it that. FF8 has really good CG's for the time it was made and for a ps1 game as well. The music was pretty good too. Well anyways, I never played FFVII but from the reveiws i heard, only losers and total dorks liked it. But hey i don't really know much about it do I. All i can say about that is it's probably a good game but who cares. I think people shouldn't get so worked up about things such as a video game. It's really lame when you think about it and it's immature. anyone in my opinion who has the time and patience to write a reveiw totally bombing one game and praising another is a dork. You may want to know why i chose to write one or you totally hate me right now for even writing one and telling you all this and it's because i thought it was needed. I think that Most FF games are kool including FFX-2. I know a lot of people thought it was stupid but I never really understood why. It's a game you try it once and see if you like it and it was the first FF game i played and i happened to like it. So (fill in blank) off FFX-2 haters!! Well I like FFVII and X-2 so now what FFVII lovers. Anyways I hit my limit on this reveiw.
Peace Out All

Cloud Strife is right-ff7 is the best and ff8 is the worst! |
| Bahamut ZERO from Scarbrough Canada says (7/Dec/2003): |
hi Cloud Strife.i read your review.when i read it i didnt believe you...but boy,i am an ff fan and i thought that no ff game would ever suck...until i actually BOUGHT ff8 for myself.like you said its a ripoff.theres no mp,junction is dumb, characters were bad....and everything you said is true.everybody who believes me(if someone besides Cloud Strife reads this)is right.now about when i bought it....well its everything Cloud Strife said.i agree with him.i cant wait for ff7-2.7 is my fave ff game.i thought 8 would be better.....but no,it was the worst ff game ever.for those of you people who say something like "ff8 is bloody brilliant!" then your not a true gamer.8 is nothing but CRAP.its the worst thing square has ever made......................................well i guess that all i can say is that ff8 sucks and that it is everything that Cloud Strife says it is.this is a disaster. NEVER BUY THIS GAME!this game is stupid.all it is is CRAP.i have a math question that is really easy to answer:CRAP+$#< remove me > at !+WASTE OF MONEY+SQUARE=FF8.thats what ff8 is. its crap,$#< remove me > at !,a waste of money and square put together.DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.this is a way to waste your hard earned money on a stupid game.

Everything I had expected from Final Fantasy |
| Steven dare from Omaha, NE, USA says (5/Sep/2001): |
I bought this game used when I bought my Playstation (used), and I loved it. I had heard a lot about Final Fantasy, including this movie they've made based on it, and I expected a lot, and I wasn't let down. It was stunning to see.
I was most surprized by how easy it was to learn this incredibly complex game. The game itself teaches you how to play it -- the first part is a test, given by one of the instructors at the school, and she runs you through a tutorial of how to use the game's features in the way that any teacher would. It was innovative and easy to learn, and, although it took me a little time to master, once I did it seemed very intuitive.
My biggest complaint is that you can't always save. When you're out on the plains, you can save anytime, but in cities or whatnot, you have to find special save points, and that bothers me. Also, drawing magic from enemies can be tedious and time consuming, and sometimes dangerous, but if you use magic to put them to sleep, then draw their magic from them, you should be okay.
All in all, this is a beautiful game, and I reccommend it to anyone who is a fan of complex and compelling RPG's with broad storylines.

Final Fantasy for all!!! |
| Steven Y. from Cabot, AR USA says (29/Jun/2004): |
Yes i have been checking out reviews on this website for awhile now and alot of what i seem to be finding is "final fantasy sucks" or ff8 is the best!!!" i am here now to tell you that no one final fantasy game is the best or was made better!! Squaresoft made all of these final fantasy games for a reason and that reason was to grab people's attention! to get everyone off of one game and to move on to the next generation! i will agree with alot of what is said on this website! final fantasy 8 has better graphics than ff7 but only b/c it was released at a later date! technology had evolved since ff7 and square just wanted to keep up with the world!! the one thing about all of you "game haters" that i do not like is your sence of "pride"!! you want everyone to think the same as you and to look from only one point of view! but then there are people like me who look from both ( or more ) standpoints!! when you all get it through your heads that no one really knows which game is best and that both final fantasy 7 and final fantasy 8 are great rpg's email me and i'll let you shout out what you think!!! i'd really like to get some more reviews here!!!
thank you for your time

Final fantasy 8 people dont like change |
| A gamer from England says (6/Jan/2004): |
i do belive that this is one of the best out as its more realistic than others the fmv's put ps2 to shame accept ff10. Seifer should have had a bigger role to make the traitory more effective and more emotion to game. A few floors in game, Quake triple and demie avalibe in too high quantites at such an early stage. The junction system effective the enemy lv up with yours effective acept omega when comes nxt to impossible Originality is what sold the game people dont like change. ff10 magic system crap. FF7 a new landmark and is wot continued the series and it was actually hard to max out stats. FF9 not bad but boring parts let it down not a bad magic system either. clever with the magic sword and summons in the game that destroy everything yet when you finally recive them you were unable to cause any real damage. another queery how come you tem mates that arn't in thhe main 3 travel with you and never level up (accept 7) this has always been an annoyance to me. Final 11 was a new step in briiliant fmv's and interaction as they were unable to speak. But again you have to get to know the charactors in order for an emotion to be felt sins evil and tragedy was not felt
