Was it as good as Tony Hawk 2? Rent this from www.RedOctane.com |
Arend Hart from Michigan says (16/Jul/2001): |
I'm beginning to believe that BMX just doesn't lend itself well to videogames. I mean, it's awfully strange that when you compare BMX bikes to skateboards, the vehicle with the smoothest ride, easiest transitions and quickest tweaks (the bike) pales in comparison to the rattle-clacky board when you throw it up on the big screen. Even when you use the same game engine.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 still reigns as the best trick-based (and overall best) game on the Playstation/PSone. Compared to its BMX sibling, it's smoother, quicker, more expansive and a whole lot more fun. That's not to say that Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX isn't a blast, because it is, it's just not THPS2.
Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX (henceforth MHPB) has experienced a wild ride between its development stages and the store shelves. Although it's on Activision O2, the same company as THPS1 and THPS2, it was actually made by Shaba, who are responsible for Grind Session. It uses a slightly bastardized version of the THPS1 game engine, with some manualing action added in. And, although it is by far the best BMX game available, it seems a little undercooked. Kinda like Grind Session felt. Who knows, maybe it's the curse of the PS2 getting so much attention, maybe it's in comparing PS2 quality to PSone. Either way, MHPB just seems a little lackluster.
Still, MHPB is an exciting game. Thankfully, it's a bit easier to complete the missions compared to THPS2. And, as with the THPS series, although it gets pretty repetitive after cycling through your fifth biker, it's still fun. There are some pretty exciting special moves, some interesting level design and the very cool Park Editor.
I like MHPB quite a bit, myself. But it just isn't as exciting as the THPS series. I'll still play it though. And, it's worth purchasing, in my opinion.
I rented this from RedOctane (www.RedOctane.com).

better the dave in real life and the game |
| cory from Hellertown Pa says (19/Apr/2001): |
this is a kool game. the graphics are so much better then dave mirra and tj. and it has better skate parks and riding space. it is just better. i want the game to come out but i want them to make it a even better game. mat hoffman rules dave ----- ----
|
Don't judge it by the demo!! |
| Aidan says (22/Jun/2001): |
I think this game is really good, it beats Dave Mirra as far as graphics go but when it comes to originality and number of tricks Dave Mirra's game is the best!
Everyone who gave it a bad score just because the demo was bad should really hire the full version. That level is the worst looking level in the whole game. The other levels all have much better textures and design and so on. Graphics and just the general feel of the game has also been improved greatly. One major problem with the demo is the camera angles going all crazy when your in the half pipe and when you crash, this has been fixed.
Still nothing can better THPS2 except THPS3 (on PS2) I've seen screen shots of THPS3 and it is going to rule... as soon as PS2 comes down to an affordable price.

The God of all games |
| Andrew Ostroff from Wilmington, DE U.S.A. says (1/Jul/2002): |
This game is the God of all games. It has got to be the greats game out there! I personally think it is better then Tony Hawk Pro Skater. This game is a must if you have Playstation.
|
Go,Hoffman! |
| EXTREME SPORTS PERSON from Florida says (14/Sep/2002): |
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX is an excellent BMX game. While its not quite a Tony Hawks Pro Skater type of expeirence, its a good game in its own rights. Quickly you will notice how easy it is to pull off tricks and do special moves that are off da hook! It has some pretty good levels, while some look crappy due to the PSONES jaggies. Matter o'fact, the graphics arent perfect, but they're alright for PSONE. If you want the best BMX game on Playstation, look no further. If you liked this you will also like: Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 1, 2, Maximum Remix, BMX XXX,

tired of all the hype...then start playing and start believing!. |
| shaun from london says (26/Sep/2002): |
Got this game through a work collegue and to be honest i almost gave it back to him saying "thanks, but no thanks. Not interested". But he insisted that it was a good game and that i should believe all the hype and just try it out. So i took it home and let it sit on my desk for a week before taking it over to my bro's place to test out and hand back the next day. We popped it into the ps1 and began blasting the game...six hours later we were whooping and cheering at all the aerial moves you could do. Needless to say it confirmed our acceptance of this particular game format and 2 days later we rushed out to buy THawk1 after spending a cumulative of 20 hours clocking the game and perfecting each rider on each course (man the weekend flew by!). If this is your first time into a format such as this you won't be disappointed. The graphics were cool enough for a game this old and this new in format. The big plus on the graphics were the awesome aerial tricks and funky camera angle. The bad points the odd glitch here and there.
The sound was standard. No bad points there.
The gameplay was just right, not too easy to begin with and not to hard to master once you got into the play of the game...although my thumbs ached afterwards trying to outdo all the aerial moves possible.
The life span i give it a classic rating, easily.
Fun factor(well my bro's neighbours knocked on our door and asked us to keep the hollering to a minimum)so yup its fun!.
Now if we could just get the game developers to understand that what we gamers want is soo simple:great graphics, wonderful characters, cool music, amazing levels, fantastic gameplay and above all a respectable price...they would make a killing and be in business for such a long time(sony/microsoft/nintendo take heed!!!).
Overall MH Pro BMX is worth a buy.It will keep you happy and entertained for a while.A must!!!.

This Game is Great!!! |
| Cheese Head from Tucson, AZ, USA says (1/Nov/2003): |
This game is way fun and all u ppl saying its hard its not. you just gotta learn how to play it. The graphics a awesome, the controls are easily, and its got great songs. Dave Mirra game sucks compared to this! I recommend all ppl get this game! its worth yur money!

Well it still doesn't beat Dave Mirra. |
| SkottyJ from Monona, WI says (9/Apr/2001): |
This game is good, but the amount of tricks that you can do in the game doesn't match Dave Mirra. Also, some of the tricks have weird names, and the basic tricks are combined with tricks that only Mat Hoffman can do. It doesn't take much to play the game if you've played Tony Hawk. Actually Mat Hoffman is Tony Hawk just with bikes and different levels. Dave Mirra is better, but Mat Hoffman does beat T.J. Lavin's game.
Long Live the MONONA MILITIA

This game totally raises the bar for games that will follow. |
| Raven from Angola NY United States says (13/May/2001): |
Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX has it all sort of- (except for "Create A Rider") I played the game and it has awesome levels including two chapionships, one BlueTorch Chamionship and the other is a CFB (crazy freaking bikers) championship. The music is okay but is annoying after awhile. This game has totally changed since its appearance in THPS2. For example when riding out of fakie, you don't have to bunnyhop, all you have to do is push up. The game includes many specials such as a superman peg grab barspin, superman tailwhip and triple tailwhip. The riders are awesome and each one pulls a stunt a little diferently. The editor is okay but its seems they were rushing because if you look at the quarter pipes, below the coping it still says THPS. Sound Effects are great the the variety of videos help contribute to an exciting gameplay. The framerate is exceptionally fast creating a nonstop gameplay. The best thing I believe in the game is The detail.

Its pretty tght |
| Mike Hawk from San Jose says (5/Jun/2001): |
This game is perrty tight but one thing that kind of pissed me off is that there is no grind specials im how do they expect to compare this game to tony hawk if there is no grind specials the game would have been alot better if there was some grind specials!

the demo was bad |
| alfred from paris says (16/Jun/2001): |
and that is why i do not want to play the full version of mat hoffman's amatuer bmx. yes or no, i'd say NOOOOOOOOOO. this demo is bad. it is almost as bad as the game sammy sosa's softball slam, but i have never played that game. the game evil zone souds really bad. sandwich meat is good. ezra knutsen is a really good football player and a quality librarian, despite the fact that he dosen't use doors.
|
i gave it a 2 |
| Conquistador Cheny LVI from Mehico says (18/Jun/2001): |
cuz the demo was bad. hey everyone, go to the sammy sosa's softball slam review page, it is funny. it is also serious. mat hoffman is from okalhoma and the annoying guy is on this game, he hosts shows on the television. i wish there was a training wheel mode on this game, that would be my fancy. it would also be really realistic. the dave mirra game was stolen from blockbutster so i never got to rent or play it. i did almost play evil zone once, but i came to my senses at the last moment. i like the game tony hawk's pro skater 2, it has a bad demo on it to.

Dave Mirra Sucks Compared to This |
| Matt from Pittsburgh, Pa says (10/Jul/2001): |
I mean, yeah, Dave Mirra is an awesome game, but Mat Hoffman has better gameplay and at least all of the moves on this game are possible. In Dave Mirra, a triple backflip or a superflip is a real move. People in real life couldn't do it, and the riders that developed Mat Hoffman know this. They made this game more realistic than Dave Mirra ever could be. Hoffman's game has great graphics for a playstation title, great gameplay, and a decent lineup of music and riders. Dave Mirra also has these, but why play something that is senseless and isnt real? Dave Mirra falls into this category.
Dave Mirra and Mat Hoffman outshow that crappy game TJ Lavin, but i think that Hoffman's game is the ultimate, even if it borrows from another great game, Tony Hawk. Buy both Mirra and Hoffman, and you'll see what i mean.

Mat Hoffman is not as good as it looks |
| Robert from Australia,Queensland says (15/Sep/2001): |
Matt Hoffman is not a good game in the area of graphics,But gamplay Hell yea! When i played the demo it seemed a heaps good game But when i brought the game it did not seem as good as i rememberd playing the demo,I sort of remember it having better graphics Mmmm but any way Mat Hoffman is good over all but i would not say it will go platinum(this means 1 of the best games). If it ever put out a 2nd Matt Hoffman Pro BMX they would of fixed up the problems in number 1.It could have more options like "make your own charcter"orput tag in the Multi player mode etc.All the stuff THPS2 added to make it better. Good game.worth buying if under $50 Australian.Yea,I'm 12 and live in Australia. This is a Good game,Not bad

THE GAME IS GREAT!!!!
|
Too much Shaba in the Game |
| Pfanny from Italy says (2/Oct/2001): |
Yes,they said that Neversoft would have been behind the whole thing, but there's just a part of the THPS' gameplay and graphics in the game, that's it.
Especially, the London Underground level reminds too much of a Grind Session level,as it's filled with pipes ans stell ramps and disused railways.
Otherwise, the game architecture lacks originality as the career mode and the options are the same as THPS.
Nevertheless,it's fun to play Matt Hoffman and the challenges won't bore you for a while...

Go through the wall then fix it all up |
| Dre from CA says (4/Nov/2001): |
This game had horrible gameplay i mean you keep failing through the walls!Plus when you grind you cant see when your about to fall then all of a sudden you fall.It also has alot of bailing with very bad graphics. All of the music is great though Deltron,Pennywise,Agent Orange,Outkast etc.I recomend you rent this first.
|
I'm not in to most extreme sports games, but this one's very fun |
| Jesse Long from Idaho , USA says (10/Nov/2001): |
As for those guys complaning about having a hard time grinding or doing many stunts, how easy do you think it would be in real life! actualy I found it easy to do moves maybe these guys should try using some combos. its actualy very easy to grind you just need to know when to stop. Sorry about raging on these guys i just dont want them talking you out of geting a good game. This game is easy to learn how to play and is real fun. even my 9-year old sister plays it from time to time and enjoys it. If she can learn to play anyone can. but if you cant, get some cheats.

Best game invented !!!!!!! |
| Matt Shepherd from Lancashire,Leyland says (27/Nov/2001): |
Mat Hoffman pro bmx is the best game made. I don`t like Tony Haw games (or usual bmx games for that matter) but Mat Hoffman caught my eye because you can choose from different types of bike where as on Tony Hawk the skateboards just had different pictures on. I don`t know about u but Tony Hawk pro skater 2 is not as realistic as Mat Hoffman pro bmx. The only bad thing about it is that the Hoffman bike factory is almost the same layout as the basement on Tony Hawk and u always get mad with Mat Hoffman when he falls off and your time limit is running out!!. But overall for me this game gets 9 out of 10 so buy it now before sumut nu comes out
