What Were They Thinking?503

Arend Hart from Michigan says (30/Oct/2000):
I know, I know... A lot of people apparently think that Dino Crisis 2 is incredible. I, however, do not feel that way. Being a huge fan of the original Dino Crisis, I find myself very disappointed with the platter-o-crap that Capcom is dishing up this time. Sure, the FMV's are great, and there is no doubt the graphics are excellent, but the poor gameplay aspects sure do leave me with a horrible taste in my mouth.

As I said before, I am a huge fan of the original Dino Crisis. It's funny, because I really wasn't a fan of the Resident Evil series and I never really cared for dinosaurs. Then Capcom comes along with a game which everyone chastises for being a direct copy of the RE series with a little Jurassic Park thrown in, and I'll be damned if I'm not hooked. I've played Dino 1 pretty consistently for a year now and to tell the truth, I was getting kinda bored with the game.

So naturally, with all of the pre-release coverage of Dino 2, I get all worked up into a cold-blooded lather. The ZDnet screenshots are incredible and the story sounds great. This has to be a great game, right? Sorry...It's not.

Let me say again, that this game has some real positive aspects. It's one of the best looking games for the Playstation. The FMV movies are amazing and the graphics are some of the best to be seen on the aged machine. The whole problem lies in the gameplay. Capcom decided to trade in Dino 1's suspense for a new type of action. This once truly immersive adventure is now just a very poorly designed shoot-em-up game. And I don't mean poorly designed in the sense that the worlds themselves are poorly designed, I'm talking about the dinosaurs and how they attack. They seem to be set up on trigger points. Regina crosses this line and two dinos attack. Kill them and cross the line again and they return. You can keep doing this over and over and over... This isn't cool. It's a slaughter. And it's cheap and it get really boring. It makes the game seem VERY unrealistic (if killing dinosaurs isn't unrealistic enough).

I'll keep playing this game and see if I like it any more than I do now. But as for now, it's just a prettier version of an old NES-quality game and it's succeeded in bumming me out.

UPDATE: Ok, I finally finished this game. It's pretty addictive once you get into it. Still, although the story is pretty good, with a pretty good, albeit unrealistic, ending, it doesn't make up for the contantly respawning dinos. I know Capcom wanted to make something different, but c'mon, you don't have to make a game full of cheap attacks to make it different. Luckily, when you can finally afford some heavy-duty weaponry, it's pretty easy to clean house. And if you keep triggering the Dino attacks, eventually they'll stop. Still, all-in-all, a pretty disappointing sequel to an amazing game. See if they have it at RedOctane (www.RedOctane.com) and give it a try.

why this game rules.34502

corran from AB, canada says (1/Nov/2003):
this game had next to zero plot. the times it actually did, it was way over my head anyways. this game made me angry, curse, and ruin a controller. [well, it was either this game or soul blade]. there wasn't much variation in the music, and most everything was more or less predictable. it wasn't really scary at all, even. and honestly, i don't like survival games that much. that much said, i didn't buy it for any of those reasons. its just so damn fun. i wanted to try out a more original survival game, and DC2 looked like a nice prospect for 15 bucks. [oooh, dinosaurs ^_____^] after beating the game, i'd have paid twice that. the pure cool-ness of being regina running around with blazing H&K MP5-K's while strafing a small outpost of dinosaurs alone was worth that price. throw in dylan blasting multiple dinos across the screen with the antitank rifle, and its just god-like. so folks, if you're looking for a game with a deep groundmoving plot that has deep philosophical undertones requiring multiple replays to find, go somewhere else. but if you want to have fun, play this. took me a bit longer than usual to gain full competence of controls, and a fairly long time to be able to string together 20+ combos, but once you get those the game seems a helluvalot better. [one reason being because if you combo 20+ raptors in a room, when you return two blueish raptors will be there to mop the floor with you. they don't stop when hit, they're fast, they hurt, and they just don't die. this would be the only thing in the game that scared me yet, and i am thankful for it :) ] the replay value is incredible too. it took me close to ten hours to beat the game the first time, and when i did i unlocked a bunch of neat features. so i went back and beat it again to unlock more. and again. and i'm still not done. much like DDR or time crisis, the point of the game is not to win. its to kick as much ass as possible while winning, putting on a good show for yourself and anybody who may be present. there are plenty of oppertunities for it too. so go get it. now. stop reading. chop chop.

Massive action and massive gameplay . Best survival horror ever .1346

Robert from Cologne Germany says (28/Dec/2000):
Dino Crisis 2 is really pure action .

Other than in old RE series or in Dino Crisis 1 the puzzling has settled down to a fair level ,so you won't get lost how in these other games .That gives an extrapoint to motivation .

Next comes the controls that are pretty easy .You always run and
the button you need to hold for shooting also autoaims to your enemy ,what can be very helpful .

Graphics .Some may be disappointed because the cool 3D enviroment of part one is gone and typical R.E. prerendered backgrounds are used again .In the old R.E. games this may looked pretty lifeless but in jungle and with great sounds this method matches nicely .Sometimes you may walk through a passage you've already seen but now there is a T-Rex walking behind the vegetation or a Triceratops stomps far away from you .Sound has a nice quality , too .

The gameplay is very original for the genre .You will spend most of the time shooting raptors or other species that act pretty clever .The raptors for example never attack you alone .To defend yourself you get an arsenal of weapons :First Weapon and Second Weapon .The first is guns ,flamethrower etc. The Second is a kind of Sword that helps you open doors .You get other secondweapons too .You play part Regina part Dylan .
When going into a passage you permanently get attacked by dinosaurs .Killing them gets you points .With these you can buy ammo and weapons and ofcourse medpaks .That is the point that gives the game a touch of an RPG .You can buy stuff at terminals spread all over the game .Also there are these pretty nice made action stages that bring more different playability to the game.

Next thing is the great atmosphere .As i said in the graphics part occuring dinosaurs make noise before they attack and the mighty T-rex makes you wanna run .All sounds and the great FMV videos make you feel like in jungle .

Last is the point that the game isn't so long to play .But with secrets to play free (even 2 games) and the fact that the story is movielike you won't matter that too much .

Last Word :Fine Game .

Wanna' kick some dinosaur but? Try this game!!!!11808

Clinton Yost from Hundred WV, USA says (25/Nov/2002):
Yes we've probably all played the great and true to itself Dino Crisis. I am a fan of dinos, and it wasa the only reason I bought the game. But when I played it, I fell in love with it!! It was a great game, but this review isn't about it right?
But my point was, have you ever been playing a game, and your stuck on a super hard puzzle. like in Dino Crisis? Heck man, those puzzles are so stinkin' hard I had to get help from my parenrs for a few!! (Pretty sad hu?) I would have never finished it without the help of the game guide, but anyway.... Dino Crisis 2, picks up the story a few years later, with characters Regina, a previous surviver of thw Dr. Kirk mission, and Dylan, a TRAT member. They will co-help each other through the game, and Dylan can be an idiot at times. But hey, whats a game without an idiot character right? So anyway, I'll tell you, theres no hard puzzles this time. Just good old shoot the dinos up enjoyment. I laugh when they scream and go "eeek!!!" It is very fun, and on top of that, the graphics are so much better than Dino Crisis one, that it looks like your actually fighting a prehistoric beast!!! I tell you, the scenery is excellent, not to mention the dinosaur passing in the jungle at times.... The story I have to say, has alittle bit of a drawback than the first one. Why would a person go to a dino infested place, just for research? Well, I guess you have to have some reason for a sequel. But it is great!! The game is so fun, you'll play for hours and not stop. You can easily finish it in two to three hours, but who cares? If it's fun, than I'll go for it!! The exstinction points were a great idea!!! The weapons are sepurb, and the gameplay...EXCELLENT!!! The dinosaurs are super smart, and I like smart beasts in games. It just makes you laugh insanely when you kill one! And there's no more finding your supplies, now you it's shop till you drop!!! For a conclusion, Dino Crisis 2 ia da' bomb!! If your gonna' get a playstation game, or buy one for someone, make it Dino Crisis 2!!! You'll get your money's worth out of it!

DINO CRISIS 2 100 TIMES BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE3524

Billy Tomlinson from Perth Australia WA says (18/Aug/2001):
DINO CRISIS 2.Is yet another great game on psx ive played the first one and thats hard boring theres hardly any differnt dinos in it and the game playes sad.The 2nd one is nothing like the first you dont even realy need to know the story line to get the 2nd one the graphic out standing the guns are futuristick and kick ass the game playes easy and makes you not wont to stop playing this game there are loads of nem dinosores even some bigger and scaryer than the T rex.I know what some of you people think a JP3 nock of well this game isnt. The green raptore filled forests ore the swamps filled with like lock ness monster typ dinsaurs the volcano caves full of amored dinosaus and the under water sunk submaren full of fined crocodiles leaves you on the ege of your seat in this game.Another really goodf thing is you buy ammo and guns in these computers found in a lot of places and you buy them with points you get points from doging the dinos ore by taking down loads of them in one area.A new thing to this capcome game is little mini games that are really fun like racing in a tankwile a trex chases you ore shooting dow a tryserotops wile on the back of a jeep with a chain gun and a lot more.I really liked the video clips they where realistic well as realistic as dinosaurs attacking you while your stuck in a time era.

(Editor: Although this is hard to read ;-) I'll post it anyway, looks like Billy put some time into it)

Be gentle, its my First review ever.394

GamerX from Paris,France says (11/Oct/2000):
I've never done a game review before but after playing Dino Crisis 2, I believed I had a very good reason to write one, admiration. This game is awesome, when I bought it, I expected it to be just another of Capcom's regular run of the mill survival series, you know, the idea's great but the controls suck and the game is full of those tomb raiderisque puzzles which not all gamers appreciate, but Dino Crisis 2 had me WOWing from the initial FMV to the ending credits, everything about this game reflects quality and shows that a lot of planning and hard work went into creating this masterpiece. The controls are tight and dead on accurate, once you work your way past the auto aim and practice a bit on your manual aiming and, believe me, its easier. The awfully slow door opening animations are gone,
the graphics are wicked, total brilliance and the replayability value is good too. the monsters are uncannily realistic and your characters' reflexes are perfect. The only downside I could come up with is that the game is a bit short( kick me !! ), but then its a great example of sacrificing quantity for quality.
Dino Crisis 2 provides great value for your money. Go out and buy it, you'll be glad you did, I know I am.

Nice looking game , only too EASY!631

mels from norway says (20/Nov/2000):
well, well, finally i own the long awaited sequal of the dino crisis, dino crisis 2..

..but, to tell you the thruth i`m a bit dissapointed, because the day after i got the game, i finished it, and with no problem at all!!!!!

okay, i`m not saying i didn`t enjoy the game. It`s just that when you pay alot of money for a game, you kinda hope for some weeks(?) of fun, with your good ol friend "the playstation"

okay, i`m probably gonna go thru the game once more, but that`s it!

It`s become a shoot-em-up game, which i thought was okay (to tell you the thruth i`m pretty tired of the resident evil type!) it kinda takes you back to the good old arcade games.. you know.

And the graphics, and fmv sequences are some of the best i`ve ever seen on this console, but there is a very important thing you must remember when you make a game, and that`s gameplay!!!!
This game is to darn easy..

why can`t they get some inspiration from the tomb raider series.. graphics isn`t all!!!!

It`s worth playing, but it`s not worth buying!!!

Dino Crisis 2 makes the first one look like a thing of the past365

John from New York, United States says (6/Oct/2000):
With the release of Dino Crisis 2, I was wondering if they could make the game any better than the first. Well, let's just say I am happy. First off, the game makes you feel more like you are in a movie, rather than a game. The cinematics are not only better but also more abundant. Second, there are two characters to play in the game other than just Regina. Third, ( and probably my favorite ) there are more dinosaurs to dance with. Dino Crisis 2 has added four new dinosaure types. Each meaner and uglier than the last. Not only that, but there is a new systems of weapons and such. Now you earn points by killing dinos and spend them and more stuff to kill them with. Now with a system like that this game is destined for success. Instead of finding ammo, you buy it. This may not sound as good as it is but the ammo is relitivly cheap. Not only that but you can buy items that expand the amount of ammo you can hold. It is obvious that Capcom has got it's new Best Game title already.

Pure fast and FUN!650

Dan from Michigan, USA says (22/Nov/2000):
Take this game for what it is. It's mostly a fast and fun action game. The first Dino Crisis was a good mix of action and puzzle solving while the second is mostly dino-killing action with some easy to solve puzzles thrown in, but not enough to slow down the game. You get to play two different characters, be the gunner on a boat with massive dinos chasing you from the water and air, and ride in a jeep while shooting rampaging triceratops! There is a satisfying assortment of weapons to use, and the dinos have some great AI that makes them seem real. You probably won't play it too many times after you beat it, but talk about pure fun! I like this game because I could finish the whole thing in a reasonable amount of time instead of getting bogged down by obscure puzzles that slow down the game flow too much (the Dino Crisis 1 pipe puzzle comes to mind). So, if you don't want to pay top dollar for it now, rent it for a few days -you won't regret it!

Pretty... uh... 'okay'...1322

A gamer from Scarborough, Ontario says (27/Dec/2000):
Yeah, the graphics are great. Yeah, the FMVs are the most lifelike cinemas one will ever see on the PSX. But in terms of gameplay, how does it hold up?

Not so great. Capcom has unfortunately traded in the tried-and-true Resident Evil-style suspense for a mindless arcade shoot-em-up. This would have been fine, if the frickin dinosaurs DIDNT RESPAWN in areas you already killed them. Sure, it's challenging, but it gets boring, and its a real tax on ammo. And Dylan is one of the biggest idiots I've ever seen in a game... ever. They shoulda just made it strictly Regina-territory like last time.

A fun rent, but if you're looking for something deep (the ext. points are completely ridiculous), dont bother shelling out your hard-earned 40 bucks. Get the original Dino Crisis instead, or a game Capcom did perfectly... Resident Evil 3.

Addictive but not even close to the original1455

Joel Karavati from Daytona, Florida USA says (1/Jan/2001):
When I rented this game about a month ago I thought it was going to be one of the greatest games of our age. A sequel to DinoCrisis! What an awesome idea!

However, I found that after playing fifteen minutes the game was going to be too predictable. For one, the dinosaurs always (and i do mean ALWAYS) come back when you retrace your steps. The story was good enough to influence me to finish this game, but the constant annoyance (rather than fun) of the dinosaurs almost became too unbearable. The puzzles are a lot like the original, but overall this one just doesn't strike me as good enough to purchase. Rent it, but don't buy it. I think a lot of people are going to put this one down before the first action sequence is over. However, if you are a die hard Capcom fan you might be compelled to finish it (as i did).

Dino Crisis 2 is one H*LL of a game!370

Ravyn from Jax.,Fla. USA says (7/Oct/2000):
Dino Crisis 2 is by far one of the Sony Playstation's better games. It's rich in detail and graphics. The game play is far better than Dino Crisis. There is just so much more you can do. Adding the sub-weapons was a great idea. The is sound is far better than the first one. The fun-factor is also through-the-roof. It's also totally different than the first one. I love the originality of the game and how it differs from the original. The point system is a blast and a lot of fun. The combos and counters add up the points really quick. I had a lot of fun playing the game. As a matter of fact I'm going through for the 3rd time. The mini game is pretty cool too.

If you haven't played this game, than I suggest that you play it as soon as you can.

Dino stars23399

MuNky from england, doncaster says (14/May/2003):
I have recently beem playing on my gamecube on resident evil. My brother plays dino crisis all the time so i had a change. The first point i would like to make is that the game is now no longer scary, like the first, and has a more arcade style game play. The way you run about killing and getting points to buy guns, ammo and life is just so kool. unlike the first you actually want to play the game over and over again. I ahve comolleted the game in under an hour to get all the characters for the sub game. The sub games are kool. Dino duel is the best in which two players endulge in a bit of dino combat. This game is a must have for playstations and will be a classic in years to come.

THIS GAME IS AWESOME!!!26134

Iwan from Bogor, Indonesia says (24/Jun/2003):
What can I say about this game beside this game is tottaly awesome. What I like is the graphic of the game, nothing compare to other game in PS One.
Apparently Capcom know what good game all about. The story itself can't compare to the 1st because it's a different, you can play the 2nd without ever play the 1st.
To me the 1st is kind of original adventure where you collect items, solving puzzle, etc. But in the 2nd game it's kinda action adventure where you only have to go to certain places and kills dinos all the way.
One other thing that is good about this game is the music, it makes my heart thumping when the dinos chase me.
So I recommended that you buy the game, now.

Pretty cool, huh?40159

Guilherme da Silva Nogueira from Americana/SP/Brasil says (4/Apr/2004):
I, from Brasil, think this game rox. Specially for the graphics part.
But i don't think this game is better than Resident Evil 3, but by de way the graphics are so much next.
This is the new generation of hystory mark games, and this game come to stay. 4 ever.

I think this playing of this game is tooooooooo much better than any other game i've played in my entire life.

Action, Suspense and Big Bruiser Dinos!22103

KonCepT from Antartica- Across from 7-11 and Hoyts says (24/Apr/2003):
Dino Crisis 2 has abandoned the slow paced, suspensful air of DC1 and as a result remains my fave game, even though I'm a a proud owner of a PS2!!! The sheer immensity of the game, although finshable at 2 hours, defies belief, Excellent PSX Graphics and unbelievable diversity of the "Wild life" combine to make it more than a little catchy! Its brain overloading plot however is quite tedious. In order to understand it in the least, you must have ALL the files, watch ALL the FMVs and have ALL the braincells an average person such as yourself should have(That's right, ALL 2 of them). BUY THIS GAME!

This game kicked!!8383

2d the mysterious from Las Vegas, Nevada : USA says (11/Jul/2002):
I very much enjoyed this game not only because i like dinosaurs but the graphics were very good I give it five thumbs up. the only problem, and its very small and I am wor/ndering if anybody can help, is that when I use my gameshark for codes, the game freezes up when I go into the main weapons menu, if anyone can help it would be great. Anywhat the last thing I want to say about this game is that its too bad that you cant play the Gigantosaurus in the battle mode that would be extra shibby.
and further most there is no creature on this earth better than or smarter than a velociraptor!!

A very playable adictive game that will keep you rivited!!!!!1042

Patrick from ONTARIO says (14/Dec/2000):
This game is fun to play any time. It'll keep your wondering about what's going to pop up next. There's puzzles that you've got to figure out. Those puzzles can get pretty hard but I've pulled trough. This game can be time consuming. gameplay wise, it was great. The dino's will keep you on your toes all the time. Sound is pretty good, graphics are great for the type of game (survival horror). Overall the originality of the game wasn't all there. I've found that it had kind of a LOST WORLD feel. I've really enjoyd this game. It was and still is my favorite.

Yeah! Much Better!13075

A gamer from Southampton, England says (17/Dec/2002):
This game is great! I played Dino Crisis 1 and it sucked! To much suspence, not enough action! Man... Dino Crisis 2 has it all, Guns, action, gore, T-Rex getting his scally rump kicked, Shooting damn lizards! The works! I love it! And I know I'm getting Dino Crisis 3 (It's on Xbox right now!). Anyone who dises this game should be ashamed... It's one of the best PSX games ever! I've completed it two times on easy and I'm doing it on normal! Hope I survive! Great game! Really, Great game. If you haven't got it buy it! Go on... It's only twenty quid..

Wow.... I am shocked22436

shaun o'malley from Australia says (28/Apr/2003):
Wow.... i am shocked, what a turn from dino crisis. Dino crisis 2 has steped from survival/horror to an action packed game, and the new points u get by killing dinosaurs is awsome. the story is after 1 year after dr.kirk was arrested and put in jail, the goverment continued to experiment on the third energy, but once again it goes wrong and sends a military base and a city back in time to the dinosaur age. Regina( main character) hass been sent back in time with dylan and a sqaud to rescue 1000 people. only regina knows what their up againts....
