it isn't quite interesting |
| A gamer from indonesia says (17/Oct/2003): |
this is a last final fantasy series on PS, but i don't know why is the purpose of SQUARE make it. His graphic and his sound is good but the gameplay is worst. it only imitate the gameplay on FF VI without a new feature. a job ability and so on and so on. there is nothing that will make my blood "spill out".
|
Hmmmmm, doesn't quite compete with any other FF so far.... |
| Klepto from Sacramento, USA says (7/Oct/2003): |
I realize almost everyone on this page loves this game to death, but I have to ask something; does it get any better when you're halfway through the game? Cuz I'm almost there, and I really see no improvement. Compared to FF7, 8, and 10, this game sucks the big one. And I totally agree with Brad; how can you turn a perverted monkey-boy into a hero? I do admit that Vivi was cute, but after a while his "What am I? Am I real? What's gonna happen to me? Oh boo hoo" talk just kind of got on my nerves. And I have three words to describe Quina: what. the. hell. The graphics are pretty good, the fighting...eh, nothing to cheer about, the storyline......umm, wait, what was it again? Oh yeah, save a princess from her evil clownish mother and some unknown guy with white hair who makes black mages, stop some mist.....uhhh, is there any more? Did I miss something? Or is this game just as simple as it appears? I'm sorry, but from now on I'll go play games with the grownups, you know, games that grip ya from the beginning and don't even let up until a week after you've finished the game.

It was so cool!! |
| Kristen from Montcalm, USA says (30/Sep/2003): |
Okay, I know everybody's getting bored with the rogue saves the princes thing, but Zidane isn't your average rogue, and Garnet isn't your average princess. I mean, how can anyone call her wimpy? She stood her ground against her own family for god's sake!Zidane was too soft-hearted to be a true rogue, and he believed in doing what was right. THat was the reason I loved this game! They weren't the average characters, and they had varied responses to various situations. Garnet surprised everyone, but putting them all to sleep. Not a very princessly thing to do. Aside from that, Vivi was not your ordinary mage. He was frightened, like a small child would be. Eiko crushed hard on Zidane, just like a six year old romantic girl would. AMarant acted like a tough guy, but he had empathy. The one thing I had a problem with, however, was there were no voice overs. It would have been so nice to hear Garnet singing to Zidane, and to have Zidane make his advances.

It's cool in some ways, but in some ways it sucks! |
| shaun wilson from North Carolina USA says (29/Sep/2003): |
Final Fantasy IX is alright, but the graphics aren't that good except in some of the FMVs.I mean they could make it look a little more real! The sound is ok, but it gets real annoying! The same beats over and over and over, it gets on my nerves. They should have a different theme for each boss, semi-boss, and each different area for the regular battles, and instead of typing the words they should've just used more discs and had them say the words. The gameplay is alright, but it takes too long in waiting for your turn to strike. I think that it's kind of tacky that you can't jump where you want and can't climb mountains without a chocobo with the special powers. The life span is too short. The amount of HP added for each level should be much higher. And why when you get annihilated do you have to go all the back to the main load screen. They should've made it so you would just go straight to where you last saved. The fun factor I would say is maybe on the weak side, I mean you can easily get into it, but unless your'e always really bored it gets annoying. Any body can enjoy it, but not many can stay enterested for a VERY long time. The originality is amazing, and it's kind of cool how they show a small hint of FF8 in the story line! But I think that there should be more of the characters from the previous game. I mean it's a series so it should be more linked together in each episode! It's almost worth the money, ALMOST!!! BUT, I think everyone, old enough to understand it, should play it and see what they think. Vivas,Zidane,And Garnet ROCK, and the others are alright.

this is the worst final fantasy game by far |
| Peter from charlottesville, va USA says (29/Sep/2003): |
good graphics and good sound dont make up for the horrible story, awful characters(minus zidane, try and name a good one.....Quina? No try again). Every time i played this game i felt bad. Final fantasy vii was the ultimate, i suggest that everyone play that instead. Final fantasy ix steals hours of your life that you can't get back.

how cool can it get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| digiridoo from uk says (7/Sep/2003): |
Ive completed it 8 times each time finding more secrets out about the game but i still havnt discovered it all.the game has got to much in it for one person alone to discover it all.ive probably discovered all the summons but not all the ultimate weapons.anyway this game rocks even more than driver 2.when i first got it i was instantly addicted.its like the game sucks you in. the graphics are amazing for psone plus theres four whole discs full of the plot which is real quality for your money.so if your new to final fantasy as soon as you turn on the game and if your not new this is a must have for your collection of squaresoft master pieces.

IT ROCKS!!!!! |
| Bevan from Tasmania says (6/Sep/2003): |
I think this game is just as good as ff7 and ff8,I especially like the music and how the the final boss is $#< remove me > at ! hard!(I had a hard time beating that $#< remove me > at !in thing). The chocobo mini game was a pain doing it but I liked it because you get rare items doing it.(I like the other mini game as well)Call me crazy but I think hades is easier than the last boss.(I haven't beat Ozma though)
When I played the game I thought it was a bit corny at the beginning but later in the game, somehow I really, really liked it!

Rock On, Squaresoft |
| Di Di Dooby from Palmdale, USA says (19/Aug/2003): |
This has got to be the coolest FF yet! True, the seventh game's plot was way better, but the graphics in this one fully blow FFVII's away. Every aspect of Final Fantasy IX is totally beautiful and amazing. The characters are interesting, the world in which the game is set is well-developed and magical, and while I'll admit that the action can be a little slow at times, those of you who think this game is "boring" should try getting thru all of FFIII! Good god I wanted to brutally murder every single character in that stupid game by the time I finally forced myself past Disc 2. There is NO FREAKIN PLOT. It totally rambles on and halfway thru they're like "Oh wow, we all knew each when we were this small!" and I'm goin what the f***??? Biggest failure in the Final Fantasy series—too bad, because the rest besides number 8 are awesome. Anyhoo. Back to FFIX. I love it. I've beaten it several times and have taken care of almost all the side quests, and I'm still not bored with the game. The only problems I have is that the final boss is SO easy to beat. I defeated him on the first try and I'm like dude, where's the challenge? But otherwise, this game is beyond cool. Those of you who haven't played it, should. And props to Squaresoft. I thought FFVII was incredible, but you guys totally outdid yourselves on Final Fantasy IX. Peace out.

Blast You, Disbelievers! |
| Siyengo from Parkes, Australia says (16/Aug/2003): |
Ha! It's back!
Reading these reviews, I was simply amazed at how many of them were pre-occupied with slamming Squaresoft's masterpiece. Honestly, people, where are your SOULS?
After the brilliant Seven and the uninspiring Eight (I won't mention Ten) I was sceptical about this. But why can't you see that this is a work of art?
Of course, I have to mention the graphics. They're beautiful. Absolutely beautiful, one of the best so far, if slightly inferior to Ten. The characters are so well animated, and the FMVs are incredible.
I don't know what you think, but I like the cute characters. Admittedly, Square could have done better on detailing a few's backgrounds, but as for me, I enjoy the here and now of gameplay, and the details of past lives are not the clincher.
As a 13-year-old, I get bored easily, but, regaredless of what others are saying, the gameplay and plot are absorbing. Even the battles I enjoyed, although the bosses were quite easy.
All I can say is that, if you are a fan of fantasy RPGs, at least give this game a test run.

The Twist |
| Sephiroth from Cali says (13/Aug/2003): |
Ok... Final Fantasy 9 was a great game! It was not as good as FFVII, FFVIII, or FFX in my opinion. One aspect of the game that I truly hated was that all the characters looked like midgets! If the people in the game actually looked like people, this game would have been even greater!!! But please, dont let the midgety-look stop you from playing the game. It's a great game... good enough to be known as a Final Fantasy game.

FFIX Owns |
| SephKid from San Antonio, TX says (13/Aug/2003): |
What can I say? This has got to be one of the best FF games ever. I mean, it has everything a game should have. Lovable characters, great gameplay, beautiful storyline. That and the length of this game is very good for an RPG if you spend time doing all of the sidequests and such. Even without doing them, the game is about 50 hours long.
But onto why the game is so good. Starting with graphics. The characters models this time around are chibi, meaning they have abnormally large heads and small bodies. Not bad at all. Unlike the FFVIII characters which were realistic, these characters have a more cartoony look, if you want to call them that. Most people might not like the idea, but it just so happens that cartoony characters portray emotions so much better. While playing the game, you can tell just by looking at the characters what they are feeling. Whether it be emotional or physical. At the beginning of the game when the characters are in a snowy mountain cave, you can see them shivering. Very good, Square! Oh, and the CG cinematics? Man, are those good! Although the characters are not as realistic as in previous games, Square has once again shown us their CG producing powers. The places these cinematics are placed in are also very good. Unlike some games, where a cinematic occurs every five minutes, this game places them in the most important and stiking areas of the storyline. They seem more like an award for playing through the game than something that just happened every other scene. You will certainly enjoy them!
Onto the sound. Again, music is by Nobuo Uematsu. Like all previous FF games, the FFIX soundtrack is one of the best to date. The music has more of a midevil theme to it, unlike FFVII or FFVIII, which took place in a modern time period. From the town music to the world map, all the music in FFIX adds onto the wonderful experience while playing the game.
Gameplay and lifespan are very important in an RPG. Unfortunately, the gameplay hasnt changed much as far as the battle system goes. However, there are tons of other things to do like the sidequests. There are so many sidequests in the game, that its hard to do them all. But if you do, this game is guaranteed to last you about 60-70 hours. Beautiful!
The originality is tops! Although the theme of a Princess and a Thief getting together has been common throughout the ages, FFIX gives the theme an original twist. The storyline itself isnt just one thing like someone trying to take over the world like most games. In fact, FFIX doesnt have just ONE storyline. It would seem like there is a seperate storyline for each character! At some point in the game all existing storylines join to make one of the best FF stories ever!
The overall value of the game is perfect! For about $50 you can own this game and enjoy it for hours on end. Not only that, but once you have beaten it you can play it again from the beginning. After 50+ hours of gameplay, its natural you might forget things. Either that or you can just watch and experience your favorite scenes all over again!
I think thats the best way I can explain FFIX. Unfortunately I cannot get into specifics, like what the storyline is and such. You will have to play it yourself. I wouldnt want to ruin anything. Well, please enjoy the game. It's a wonderful experience! Dont bother renting, this is a must buy!

Great |
| Stealth from Indiana says (13/Aug/2003): |
I thought that Final fantasy 9 is a great game. It would get boring if it was the same type of game play over and over. I like all the final fantisies and I have played them all. Graphics I don't care much about but it has to have a great story line. I also like it that they change the battle system in each game and how it works. Changing the games makes it more interesting and I am sure RPG fans will agree with me, is all RPG's had the same exact type of battle system then it get extremely boring. My love goes out to all RPGs out there, especially Final Fantasy 9.

THIS WAS THE BEST GAME EVER MADE!!!! |
| Dottie from ohio,USA says (11/Aug/2003): |
Final Fantasy IX is the tightest game ever made.I loved the animation of the movies that were displayed, very life like. The music was very nice especially the "Melodies of Life" song.Which is played alot in the game.As a matter of fact it's my favorite game.I love the fact that not all the characters are human.Kuja looks very tight when he Tranced.Well overall my favorite character is gotta be Zidane. Why?Because he's deep, he likes to flirt with other girls,he's funny and most of all, he's brave!
|
At least I cleared it. |
| Brad Williams says (9/Aug/2003): |
I totally put this game away at one point for over a year. I then decided that not clearing a final fantasy was not an option. The game bored me to death. The main character was a what? He's a damn monkey boy. I hated him. I had no interest in building stats or at some points even playing the game. It was with great pain, that I cleared this game. The ending sucks and it was clearly designed to please a 10 year old. Unfortunantly I'm a little older, so I couldn't dumb myself down enough to enjoy this game.
